SARIMUL LASKAR -SILCHAR:-Katigorah, Gumra Market’s long-neglected and abandoned historic Inspection Bungalow (IB) has turned into a massive garbage dump due to years of apathy. Once a prestigious government guest house, the IB is now in a deplorable state. Local traders have been regularly dumping market waste, Rotten materials, and discarded items inside the bungalow premises. As a result, the entire area reeks of foul odour, making it difficult for passersby to even walk nearby.
Over the years, water has accumulated around the bungalow, creating stagnant pools, while wild bushes, trees, and creepers have completely covered the walls.
The once iconic structure now resembles a haunted house, evoking painful memories for local residents who remember its glorious past.Despite repeated demands by locals for immediate repair and restoration, the authorities paid no heed for a long time. The issue finally caught the attention of newly elected MLA Kamalahya Dey Purkayastha.
On Monday, the MLA visited the dilapidated Inspection Bungalow at Gumra Market along with officials from various departments for an on-spot inspection. Expressing deep concern over the pathetic condition of the heritage structure, he stated that the Gumra IB is not just an ordinary government building but an important part of Assam’s history.
Addressing the media after the visit, MLA Kamalakhya De Purkayastha said, “The Gumra Inspection Bungalow is closely associated with the old history and memories of Assam. Former Chief Ministers including the late Pradyut Bordoloi, along with many other former Chief Ministers, Ministers, MPs, and senior government officials of the state and country used to take rest and stay here during their visits. Due to years of neglect and lack of repair, the bungalow has fallen into ruins.”
He gave a strong assurance to the people, saying, “Respecting the long-standing demand of the local residents, the repair and renovation work of the Gumra IB will begin very soon. It will be reconstructed and developed as a full-fledged historic Inspection Bungalow so that its past glory is restored once again.”
The announcement has brought a wave of relief and joy among the local people and traders. Many residents expressed that the restoration of the IB will not only remove the stench and eyesore from the market area but will also enhance the beauty of the locality and preserve valuable historical memories for future generations.
Locals have thanked MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha for his prompt initiative and are now eagerly awaiting the early start of the renovation work.
