New Delhi: In a major policy decision aimed at expanding housing benefits for the urban poor, the Delhi government has approved rehabilitation benefits for all eligible families living in slum clusters established up to January 1, 2025, a move expected to benefit nearly 20 lakh people across the national capital.

The decision was taken at the 36th Board Meeting of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. According to the government, the revised eligibility cut-off will pave the way for permanent housing for around 4-5 lakh families residing in JJ clusters across Delhi.

The meeting was attended by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma and senior officials. The decision follows a recent high-level review and aligns with the provisions of the Delhi Slum and JJ Cluster Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy 2026.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the move strengthens the government’s commitment to providing permanent and dignified housing to economically weaker sections. She said eligible beneficiaries will be allotted multi-storey flats equipped with essential civic amenities, with efforts made to rehabilitate families within or near their existing settlements under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan’ approach.

The government also announced that rehabilitation colonies will include schools, anganwadi centres, healthcare facilities, children’s playgrounds and other essential infrastructure. It is also considering provisions to accommodate eligible members of the same family living in separate units within a slum structure, subject to prescribed charges.

The Delhi government said the rehabilitation programme will be implemented in mission mode through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with the objective of ensuring safe and improved housing for every eligible beneficiary.
