New Delhi: The Delhi Assembly on Saturday paid floral tributes to Veer Vithalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel and Shaheed Bhagat Singh on their birth anniversaries, with Deputy Speaker Shri Mohan Singh Bisht describing the historic Assembly premises as a living testament to India’s democratic voice and freedom struggle.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Bisht said Vithalbhai Patel and Bhagat Singh represented two important dimensions of India’s freedom movement—one strengthening the voice and dignity of Indians through legislative institutions, and the other inspiring an entire generation through courage and sacrifice.
Senior officers and officials of the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat also paid floral tributes and recalled the contribution of the two personalities to India’s parliamentary heritage and freedom struggle.
Highlighting Vithalbhai Patel’s parliamentary legacy, Shri Bisht noted that on August 24, 1925, he became the first Indian to be elected President (Speaker) of the Central Legislative Assembly, which functioned from the present-day Delhi Assembly premises. He said Patel upheld the independence and dignity of the Chair, protected the rights and privileges of Members and worked towards an independent Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
Referring to Bhagat Singh, Shri Bisht recalled the historic Central Legislative Assembly incident of April 8, 1929, when Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs as an act of protest against colonial legislation and used the subsequent proceedings to convey their message of resistance.
The Deputy Speaker said Bhagat Singh’s courage, patriotism and sacrifice continued to inspire generations.
The tributes at the historic Delhi Assembly premises highlighted the enduring connection between India’s legislative heritage and its freedom struggle, while underscoring the responsibility of the present generation to uphold democratic values.
