Samir Kumar Das, 28, worked as an autorickshaw driver in the Dagonbhuiyan area of Feni district. Police said that the attackers fled with the vehicle after the assault.

Another Hindu man has been killed in Bangladesh amid unrest in the country. The victim, identified as 28-year-old Samir Kumar Das, was beaten to death by a mob on Sunday (January 11) night. With this, as many as 12 Hindus have been murdered so far in the country, which has been witnessing violent protests following the death of anti-India student leader Sharif Osman Hadi.

Das worked as an autorickshaw driver in the Dagonbhuiyan area of Feni district. According to police, the attackers fled with the vehicle after the assault. The 28-year-old’s body was later found near a subdistrict hospital.

The police said preliminary findings suggest the incident was a case of robbery and murder. An investigation is underway, and no arrests have been reported so far.

Das’s killing comes days after a Hindu grocery shop owner from Narsingdi district was attacked by assailants at his shop and later pronounced dead once rushed to a hospital. Bangladesh authorities have launched an investigation into the matter.

Furthermore, two more Hindu men died over the past week due to violence against religious minorities. Joy Mohapatra died at a hospital in Sylhet on Friday after allegedly ingesting poison over a monetary dispute regarding unpaid mobile phone instalments. His family, however, reportedly claimed Mohapatra was beaten, humiliated and provoked by a shopkeeper, identified as Amirul Islam, over 500 Taka instalment for a mobile phone bought on credit. Another Hindu man, identified as Mithun Sarkar and aged 25, died after jumping into a canal to escape a mob which accused him of theft in northwestern Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has alleged that over the past two weeks, miscreants raped a Hindu widow, robbed a Hindu jewellery shop and intimidated a Hindu commissioner or administrative chief of northwestern Kurigram district while she discharged duties as the election returning officer, news agency PTI reported.

In the past seven days, it said, miscreants raped a Hindu widow, looted a Hindu jewellery shop and intimidated a Hindu deputy commissioner or administrative chief of northwestern Kurigram district as she was discharging duties as the election returning officer.

Bangladesh head Muhammad Yunus-led administration though has condemned the minority killings, it has repeatedly described the incidents as “not communal” and called the death figures “mere exceptions”. The country is slated to hold general elections on February 12, the first since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s regime.
