SARIMUL LASKAR, SILCHAR:- Since the BJP-led government came to power in Assam in 2016, the state has embarked on a silent yet profound journey of development. This momentum has accelerated significantly after Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed the role of Chief Minister in 2021. Once neglected and plagued by unrest, Assam has now emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing economies. According to recent data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Assam’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) grew by 45% between 2020 and 2025, far surpassing the national average of 29%. During this period, the state’s economy has expanded from approximately ₹4.10 lakh crore to ₹7.41 lakh crore.
This remarkable progress is not limited to numbers alone. It reflects an improvement in the quality of life for the people of Assam, a revolution in infrastructure, and a renewed sense of confidence in the future. With the support of the Central Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the strong, dynamic governance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam is rapidly advancing towards the dream of “Developed Assam”.
The economic transformation of Assam is particularly noteworthy. Per capita income has risen from around ₹1,03,371 in 2020-21 to nearly ₹1,59,000 in 2024-25 — an increase of more than 54%. The state’s revenue collection has also grown significantly. The government’s proactive policies to attract industrial investment, ambitious projects such as semiconductor plants, and massive infrastructure development have served as the main drivers of this growth.
Assam is now establishing itself as the economic hub of North-East India. Investment is increasing in traditional sectors like tea, oil and gas, agriculture, and tourism, as well as in emerging areas. Initiatives like the Advantage Assam summits have successfully drawn both domestic and foreign investors.
Under the BJP government, the face of infrastructure in Assam has changed completely. Thousands of kilometres of roads have been constructed over the past decade. Several new bridges have been built over the Brahmaputra River, including the Jorhat-Majuli Bridge, Palashbari-Sualkuchi Bridge, Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge, and Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge. These bridges have not only made transportation easier but have also boosted economic activities across different regions of the state.
Major projects such as the Guwahati Ring Road, elevated corridors, airport modernization, railway network expansion, and inland waterways development are connecting Assam with modern India. The successful implementation of Prime Minister Modi’s Act East Policy has positioned Assam as the gateway to North-East India.
In the education sector, new universities, colleges, digital classrooms, and skill development programmes have been introduced. Special emphasis has been placed on girls’ education and youth employment.
The most impressive progress has been witnessed in the healthcare sector. Under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, several new medical colleges have been established or are under construction. The government is working with the vision of setting up medical colleges in every district. The establishment of institutions like AIIMS, super-specialty blocks, advanced cancer and cardiology departments, and the expansion of cashless treatment facilities are saving the lives of lakhs of people.
Schemes such as Orunodoi, Mission Basundhara, and others have provided land rights, financial assistance, and food security to lakhs of families. Special initiatives have been launched to empower women entrepreneurs. More than 1.46 lakh government posts have been filled, and easy loan facilities have been provided to encourage self-employment among the youth.
Long-standing unrest has been significantly reduced, creating an environment of peace and harmony in Assam. Strict campaigns against drug trafficking and effective crime control measures have made public life more secure.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has become the symbol of Assam’s development. From his tenure as Education Minister to his current role as Chief Minister, he has demonstrated exceptional dedication, transparency, and swift decision-making in every responsibility. Under his leadership, Assam is not only becoming economically stronger but is also preserving its rich cultural heritage and maintaining social harmony. He has proved that good governance, visionary thinking, and public welfare can go hand in hand. His bold initiatives and tireless efforts have instilled new hope in the hearts of the people of Assam.
The past ten years of the BJP government have truly been a “Decade of Delivery” for Assam. Challenges still remain, but the data and visible progress clearly show that the state is moving in the right direction. Thanks to leadership like that of Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s future is bright. If this pace continues, Assam will soon establish itself as one of India’s leading states.
Assam’s development journey is not just the story of one state — it is a shining example of good governance, strong determination, and collective effort.
