Bangladesh: Seven idols being prepared for the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations were vandalised by unidentified persons at a Hindu temple in Jamurki Paschimpara, in Tangail district’s Mirzapur upazila, local media reported.
The incident is believed to have occurred between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to The Daily Star.
The temple has been hosting Durga Puja for around 85 years under the auspices of the Jamurki Arya Samiti. The seven idols, including the main idol of Goddess Durga, were reportedly almost complete when they were damaged.
Prakash Bakli, president of the Jamurki Arya Samiti, said he discovered the vandalism after returning to the temple on Thursday along with other members of the Hindu community.
“We do not know who carried this out. We have lodged a formal complaint with the police. We want the law enforcement agencies to identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” Bakli said.
Tangail Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar, along with other senior police officials, visited the site following the incident. Police assured members of the Hindu community that legal action would be taken against those responsible, according to the report.
