New Delhi, 31 December 2025: A peaceful yet powerful protest was held at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday afternoon, as citizens from diverse backgrounds gathered to demand justice for Angel Chakma , a young man from Northeast India whose tragic death has sparked nationwide outrage.
From 2 pm to 5 pm, the protest site echoed with slogans against racial discrimination and calls for accountability. Participants held placards reading “Justice for Angel” , “End Racism Now” , and “Northeast is Not Outside India” , highlighting the deep pain and frustration over recurring instances of racism and violence faced by people from the Northeastern states in various parts of the country.
According to the organizers, Angel Chakma was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals who reportedly targeted him due to his racial identity and physical features. The brutal assault led to his death, an incident that many protesters described as “a stain on the nation’s conscience” and “a reminder that racism is a harsh reality in India”.
The protest had three clear objectives:

  1. To condemn racial violence and hate crimes in the strongest possible terms.
  2. To demand swift, transparent, and impartial justice for Angel Chakma and his family.
  3. To raise awareness about systemic racism faced by citizens from Northeast India and to appeal for stronger legal protections and stricter enforcement against racial discrimination.
Speakers at the gathering included student leaders, rights activists, representatives of Northeastern communities, and concerned citizens. They urged the authorities to ensure an independent investigation, speedy trial, and exemplary punishment for those responsible for Angel’s death.
The demonstrators also called on the central and state governments to introduce clearer anti-racism provisions, improve sensitization of law enforcement agencies, and promote inclusive education and media representation of Northeastern communities.
As the protest concluded peacefully, participants reiterated that their struggle would continue until justice is delivered and concrete steps are taken to ensure that no one in India is targeted, humiliated, or killed because of their ethnicity, appearance, or region of origin.
