New Delhi: Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday flagged off a special train carrying around 1,400 pilgrims for the ‘Somnath Swabhimaan Parv – Somnath Yatra’ from Safdarjung Railway Station.

Described as a first-of-its-kind initiative, the programme has been launched under the leadership of the Delhi government, making it the first state or Union Territory to organise such a large-scale, fully coordinated pilgrimage to the Somnath Temple. The yatra aims to commemorate what organisers called “1,000 years of unbroken faith” while reconnecting citizens with India’s spiritual heritage.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Shekhawat termed the flag-off a “Shivmay Shubharambh”, calling it an auspicious beginning that reflects India’s cultural legacy and national pride. He said the initiative highlights the enduring significance of the Somnath Temple and the spirit of unity embedded in Indian traditions. He, along with Ms Gupta and Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, interacted with pilgrims and extended their best wishes.

Chief Minister Ms Gupta said the yatra is part of a broader nationwide observance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She described the initiative as more than a religious journey, calling it a celebration of India’s civilisational heritage and cultural consciousness. Referring to projects such as the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and Mahakal Lok, she said such efforts have revitalised the country’s cultural identity and that the Somnath Yatra continues in the same spirit.

Mr Mishra added that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening faith, dignity and cultural connections among citizens, particularly for families and devotees participating in the pilgrimage.

The train will travel from Delhi to Veraval in Gujarat, from where pilgrims will proceed to Somnath and other religious sites. The Delhi government is covering travel and meals, while the Gujarat government will provide accommodation, local transport and temple arrangements. The return journey is scheduled for 5 May.

Officials said 19 AC 3-tier coaches have been deployed, with onboard medical teams, housekeeping staff and Railway Protection Force personnel to ensure safety, hygiene and comfort. Cultural performances featuring folk traditions from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab marked the flag-off ceremony, creating a festive and devotional atmosphere.
