Chandigarh/Amritsar: In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence unit in Amritsar has dismantled a narcotics smuggling network, arresting three operatives and seizing 12 kg of heroin.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the accused were allegedly linked to a Pakistan-based smuggler, highlighting the trans-border nature of the operation. The arrests come amid the state government’s intensified drive to curb drug abuse under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Gurjant Singh from Village Sakatra in Tarn Taran, and Arvinder Singh and Jashanpreet Singh, both residents of Village Bugga in the same district. Police also impounded a black Hero motorcycle used to transport the contraband.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Gurjant Singh was in direct contact with a Pakistan-based handler and would receive heroin consignments via drones near his village. He would then distribute the drugs to his associates on instructions from across the border.
Acting on specific intelligence about a recent consignment delivery, police teams set up checkpoints along the Amritsar–Chabal Road near a toll plaza. The trio was intercepted during the operation, leading to the recovery of the heroin.
The DGP said further investigations are underway to trace both forward and backward linkages of the network, adding that more arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar.
