Chandigarh/Amritsar: Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence (CI) unit in Amritsar has busted a narcotics smuggling module with the seizure of 40 kg of heroin and the arrest of four operatives, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Narinder Singh alias Nanni, Suraj, Jacob Masih and Ajay Kumar alias Ravi, all residents of Kot Isse Khan in Moga district. Police have also impounded two vehicles — a Toyota Corolla Altis (PB03AK1810) and a BMW (UP14CJ4646) — allegedly used to transport the narcotics.

According to the DGP, preliminary investigations revealed that the accused had retrieved the heroin consignment on the directions of their handler, a habitual narcotics smuggler, and were planning to further supply it across different locations in Punjab.

The operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs that a drug smuggling network was being operated by a proclaimed offender with the help of his associates, who had come to Amritsar to collect a large heroin consignment. Acting on the tip-off, CI teams laid a naka on the Amritsar–Tarn Taran highway and intercepted the four accused near DPS School, Amritsar. A search led to the recovery of 40 kg of heroin from their possession.

DGP Yadav said further investigations are underway to trace the complete supply chain and identify backward and forward linkages, including possible cross-border connections.

A case, FIR No. 1 dated 14-01-2026, has been registered under Sections 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar.
