Pankaj Nath, Assam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state government is rapidly increasing investment in the power sector to make Assam an energy-rich state and ensure reliable power supply to domestic and industrial consumers. In a message shared on social media platform X, the Chief Minister gave information about the development in the power sector of the state and the ongoing projects. He informed that at present there are 82 active substations in Assam with a total grid capacity of 10,000 MVA. The state’s transmission network has now grown to 5,300 circuit kilometres (CKM), significantly improving power evacuation and distribution capacity. Referring to the future plans, the Chief Minister said that 16 new substations are planned to be built under the Power Infrastructure Development Programme. These new substations are estimated to add an additional 6,340 MVA of grid capacity, further strengthening the transmission system. Along with this, preparations are also underway for the commissioning of 957 CKM of new transmission lines, which will help in reducing transmission bottlenecks while improving connectivity between generation sources and demand centers. The government says that all this modernization and expansion is necessary to meet the growing power demand due to industrial development, urbanization and rural electrification. Officials have said that increased transmission capacity and grid reliability are imperative to support Assam’s long-term economic development goals. The Chief Minister reiterated that the ongoing projects are aimed at providing reliable and quality electricity service to households, businesses and industries. The announcement is part of the state’s broader effort to make Assam a major economic hub of the northeast through improved infrastructure and uninterrupted power supply. The investments and schemes being made by the government are expected to reduce power cuts, increase industrial investment and ensure better standard of living for the general public in the coming time.
