Kathmandu: In a gesture of cross-border compassion, Wat Thai Lumbini in Nepal and the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu have joined hands to support families affected by recent flash floods and landslides across Nepal.
Phra Ratchapothiwithet Watcharasuthee (Supot, P.Dh.9), Abbot of Wat Thai Lumbini and Deputy Head of the Dhammaduta Mission (India-Nepal), along with Donwis Poolsawat, Ambassador of Thailand to Kathmandu, presented a donation of 1 million Nepalese Rupees, approximately 216,785 Baht, to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund on September 16, 2026.
Dr Ghanashyam Upadhyaya, Secretary of Nepal’s Ministry of Finance, accepted the contribution on behalf of the Government of Nepal at a formal ceremony in Kathmandu.
The relief fund was established by the Nepalese government to mobilise resources for people affected by recent flash floods and landslides that have devastated several parts of the country. The disasters have displaced thousands of families, destroyed homes and disrupted livelihoods, leading to appeals for national and international assistance.
Speaking during the handover, the Abbot reaffirmed the Dhammaduta Mission’s commitment to humanitarian service, stressing that compassion is at the heart of Buddhist teachings. He said the contribution reflected the enduring friendship between Thailand and Nepal and their shared responsibility to support people facing hardship.
Ambassador Poolsawat also expressed Thailand’s solidarity with Nepal during the difficult period, describing the donation as a symbol of the deep bonds between the two countries. He expressed hope that the funds would provide tangible relief to affected communities.
Dr Upadhyaya thanked the Thai delegation and Wat Thai Lumbini for their generosity, saying the contribution would support relief and rehabilitation efforts for survivors of the disasters.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for those affected by the floods and landslides and a renewed commitment to cooperation between Thailand and Nepal in humanitarian efforts.
