Sarimul Laskar,Silchar:- A disturbing incident of alleged moral policing, body shaming and unauthorised search aboard a passenger train from Silchar to Guwahati (en route to Dimapur) has triggered widespread condemnation on social media. The video of the episode, which took place on May 16, has gone viral, raising serious concerns over passenger safety, mob mentality and misuse of police connections.According to reports, Samsad Begum Choudhury (also referred to as Shamshad in some accounts), a resident of Badripar area under Silchar Sadar police station, boarded the train from Silchar railway station on May 16. She was travelling alone to Dimapur in Nagaland, where she has been working as a tailor for nearly a decade. Her father is a retired police personnel and her brother serves in the Border Security Force (BSF). She was carrying several bags and was dressed in a kurta with a scarf.

A group of passengers allegedly surrounded her after the train crossed certain stations. Led by a woman identified as Madhumita Roy (known on Facebook as “Madhumita Roy Mou”), the group subjected Samsad to public humiliation. Madhumita Roy reportedly claimed to be the wife of the officer-in-charge of Rangirkhari Police Outpost in Silchar. The group accused the victim of suspicious activities, linking her falsely to ULFA, questioned her gender identity with remarks such as “You don’t look like a woman,” and conducted an illegal search of her bags. They allegedly looked for meat items and other belongings while the incident was reportedly live-streamed on Facebook.

In the viral video, Samsad Begum Choudhury is seen visibly distressed but trying to remain composed. Fellow passengers documented the harassment, which has now sparked debates on transphobia, communal bias, and the dangers of vigilante actions inside moving trains. Many have pointed out that if there was genuine suspicion, the matter should have been reported to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) or GRP instead of resorting to mob-style questioning and search.

Social media platforms have erupted with strong reactions. Netizens have condemned the incident as a clear case of moral policing, violation of individual dignity and potential misuse of police identity. Demands for strict legal action against those involved, including Madhumita Roy and her associates, have grown louder. Several users have tagged Cachar Police, Assam Police and Northeast Frontier Railway authorities, calling for a thorough investigation.

However, as of the latest updates, no formal FIR has been publicly confirmed and no arrests have been reported. Railway authorities are yet to issue an official statement on enhanced security measures for lone women travellers on this route.

This episode has once again highlighted the vulnerability of women, especially those travelling alone or belonging to marginalised sections, in public transport. It also raises critical questions about the thin line between citizen vigilance and unlawful harassment. Civil society groups and women’s organisations have appealed for calm and have urged the administration to ensure justice for the victim while preventing any communal polarisation.

Authorities are under pressure to act swiftly. The public expects a transparent probe, identification of all involved persons, and measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents. Passenger safety protocols, including better presence of RPF personnel on long-distance trains originating from Silchar, need urgent strengthening.

As the investigation proceeds, this case serves as a stark reminder that personal biases and unchecked group behaviour cannot be allowed to override the rule of law and basic human dignity inside public spaces like trains. Further updates will be reported as the case develops.
