Islamabad: A sprawling scam network allegedly operating from Pakistan and targeting victims across the world has come under intense scrutiny, exposing a disturbing picture of cyber fraud and illegal call-centre operations.

The crackdown gathered pace after Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested 284 foreign nationals during a major operation against alleged online fraud and other illegal activities. Following legal formalities, all 284 were reportedly ordered to leave Pakistan within 15 days, subject to possessing valid travel documents and completing the required procedures.

The investigation is now widening beyond the arrests. Sources said authorities have extended their probe to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Immigration, passport and visa authorities are also being asked to provide information on the foreigners’ entry, residence, business activities and alleged links to cybercrime networks.

The investigation reportedly uncovered the case of an Indonesian national who had entered Pakistan three months earlier claiming to work as a chef. According to the reported account, he admitted being part of a nine-member group comprising two Chinese and seven Indonesians.

The alleged scam operation was reportedly generating $80,000 a month, with Indonesian women aged over 40 among its targets. The admission has intensified scrutiny over whether Pakistan has become a base for organised cyber fraud operations targeting victims abroad.

Authorities are now examining the network’s alleged international reach, including potential victims and suspected members located outside Pakistan.

The FIA, National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and police are reportedly working together to trace financial transactions, digital infrastructure and other links associated with the alleged scammers.

The federal government has also decided to launch a nationwide crackdown targeting illegal call centres, cyber fraud and obscene content, according to sources.

A special task force operating under FIA headquarters is expected to monitor the crackdown and submit daily reports to the Ministry of Interior. Its mandate will reportedly include investigations into alleged extortion, blackmail, gambling and fraud.

Authorities have also prepared a list of call centres allegedly operating in Karachi, sources said.

The government has directed all relevant institutions to provide full cooperation to the task force as Pakistan intensifies its efforts to dismantle networks accused of using the country as a launchpad for scams targeting victims overseas.
