New Delhi: Calling education, research and institution-building the foundation of a Viksit Bharat, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday said India’s ambition to become a global knowledge leader must be rooted in the vision of legendary educationist Dr Ashutosh Mookerjee.
Speaking at the Delhi Legislative Assembly while unveiling “The Collected Speeches of Bengal Tiger Asutosh Mookerjee” on the 162nd birth anniversary of the iconic jurist and educationist, Nadda said Dr Mookerjee’s ideals of constitutional values, academic excellence and fearless scholarship remain highly relevant in shaping modern India.
Drawing a striking analogy, the Union Minister remarked that just as a mobile phone requires daily recharging, public life too needs constant intellectual renewal, adding that Dr Mookerjee’s speeches continue to inspire constitutional reasoning, informed debate and national commitment.
The commemorative publication, brought out by the Delhi Legislative Assembly, compiles 32 of Dr Mookerjee’s legislative speeches highlighting issues such as university autonomy, civil liberties, administrative accountability and nation-building through education.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the National Education Policy reflects many of Dr Mookerjee’s long-standing ideas, particularly its emphasis on Indian languages, value-based learning and preserving India’s intellectual heritage. She described the publication as an inspiration for the younger generation.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta hailed Dr Mookerjee as an architect of India’s intellectual renaissance, saying his unwavering commitment to scholarship, merit and institutional excellence laid the foundation for India’s academic growth. He noted that the publication aims to reconnect scholars, students and policymakers with one of the country’s greatest institution-builders.
The event was attended by Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra, Delhi ministers, MPs, MLAs, academicians and distinguished guests. Documentary films on the Delhi Legislative Assembly and the newly released publication were also screened during the programme.
