Pankaj Nath, Assam: Assam’s Kamrup district marked the 65th Teachers’ Day with a dignified ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 5, honoring veteran educators for their lifelong service, particularly in primary education. The district-level event, organized by the Kamrup district administration and the education department, took place in the auditorium of Guwahati Biotech Park. It began with a floral tribute and lamp-lighting at the statue of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the philosopher, teacher and former President whose birthday is observed as Teachers’ Day nationwide. As part of the new “Governor Assam Senior Teacher Honour–2026,” senior retired teachers from Kamrup received recognition for their contributions. Mohan Chandra Sharma, a senior retired teacher from Borka, was presented the award at his residence by District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra on behalf of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Eight other senior teachers from various blocks in the district were similarly honored at their homes by the respective Co District Commissioners and circle officers. Geeta Shri Lachit, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education), delivered the welcome address, saying teachers do more than impart academic knowledge: they instill moral values, discipline, responsibility and humanity, which sustain a healthy and progressive society. District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra extended his best wishes to the teachers and described them as pivotal guides in students’ lives and futures. He urged teachers to understand each student’s dreams, strengths and weaknesses and provide tailored guidance, and he reiterated that despite challenges teachers play an invaluable role in nation-building and social development. The chief speaker, Prof. Purneshwar Nath, retired head of department from Darrang College, emphasized that education should nurture honesty, courage, self-respect, compassion and strong ethics alongside academic success. He cited the influence of teachers on noted personalities—referring to the celebrated artist Bhupen Hazarika—to illustrate how teachers can shape a student’s trajectory by recognizing and fostering talent. The ceremony also recognized outstanding teachers of Kamrup and applauded those who received last year’s state-level “Best Teacher” awards. Additionally, the Rajendra Prasad Medhi Memorial Trust presented the Rajendra Prasad Medhi Memorial Award to the top-scoring student in Assamese from Kamrup in the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Assam State School Education Board; the prize included a certificate, a gamocha, a shawl and ₹10,000 cash. Officials present included CEO of Kamrup Zilla Parishad Siddhartha Goswami; District Development Commissioner Garga Mohan Das; Additional Deputy Commissioner Aditya Gogoi; Inspector of Schools Tapan Kalita; other education department officers; and teachers from various district institutions.
