Chandigarh: In a major statewide enforcement drive, Punjab Police checked nearly 1.80 lakh vehicles over 15 days and issued 39,872 challans for the illegal use of hooters, sirens, flashers and black window films. The operation also led to the impounding of 412 vehicles and the removal of over 2,600 unauthorized signalling devices.
Launched on the directions of Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, the special campaign targeted private vehicles using emergency signalling equipment and illegal tinted films to flout traffic rules or evade identification. Police teams inspected 1,79,980 vehicles, removing 202 hooters, 49 sirens, 2,430 flashers and black films from 2,445 vehicles during the statewide operation.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Praveen Sinha said hooters, sirens and flashers are reserved exclusively for emergency and essential service vehicles, warning that their misuse by private individuals would not be tolerated. He said the enforcement drive would continue with zero tolerance, with regular checks and strict legal action against violators.
Meanwhile, under the ongoing ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ campaign, Punjab Police arrested 333 individuals and two proclaimed offenders on Day 157 of the operation. Seven weapons were recovered, while preventive action was taken against 157 persons, taking the total number of arrests under the campaign to 40,684 since its launch.
