Chandigarh: Acting on directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab Police has disposed of 7,402 impounded vehicles in a month-long statewide drive aimed at reducing the backlog of unclaimed vehicles lying in police stations.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the disposal campaign was carried out alongside intensified enforcement against traffic violations and illegal activities, during which 3,355 additional vehicles were impounded across the state. As a result, the total number of vehicles in police custody has come down from 59,076 to 51,674.
The police said 8,121 vehicle release applications are currently under legal scrutiny, while 1,276 cases under Section 52A of the NDPS Act are awaiting legal attestation of inventory and photography.
The disposal drive witnessed significant progress across districts, with Jalandhar Commissionerate leading by clearing 779 vehicles, followed by Moga (697), Bathinda (631), Ferozepur (586), Ludhiana Rural (538) and Ludhiana Commissionerate (460). Other districts, including Tarn Taran and Fazilka, also reported substantial disposals.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha said the Punjab Police would further accelerate the release of vehicles under custody through time-bound legal procedures while ensuring full compliance with the law.
