
Chandigarh/Patiala: In a major crackdown on the circulation of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), the Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence unit in Malerkotla has busted a counterfeit currency module and arrested four persons with fake notes worth ₹5.50 lakh.
According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, all the recovered fake currency notes were in ₹500 denomination. The arrested accused have been identified as Nazar Khan of Malerkotla, Raj Mohammad of Sangrur, Mukhtiyar Singh alias Gurjit Singh of Haryana’s Jind district, and Asif Ali of Malerkotla.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Raj Mohammad has a criminal background and was previously booked under the NDPS Act.
Sharing operational details, AIG Counter Intelligence Patiala Simrat Kaur said the operation began with the arrest of Nazar Khan and Raj Mohammad, from whom counterfeit currency worth ₹4 lakh was recovered. Further investigation led to the arrest of the remaining two accused and the recovery of an additional ₹1.5 lakh in fake notes.
Punjab Police said further investigation is underway to trace the forward and backward linkages of the network, while more arrests and recoveries are expected in the coming days.
A case under Sections 179 and 180 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Amargarh Police Station in Malerkotla.
