Pankaj Nath Assam: A family from Changsari in Kamrup district has condemned the negligence of the hospital and the indecent behaviour of doctors for not getting a bed and proper treatment at AIIMS Guwahati in Assam. A girl named Parul from the victim’s family says that her brother’s decubitus ulcer was in a critical condition, but the hospital staff refused to give him adequate treatment and beds, which worsened the patient’s condition. According to the family, they first met the doctor through the OPD, where they faced abusive language and questions. The doctors said that beds were not available and were asked to dressing at home for treatment. The family said that despite repeated requests, they could not get help from any doctor at AIIMS. Even after dressing at home, the wound did not heal and the infection progressed, on which the doctors advised an operation. Due to financial constraints, the family could not afford private treatment and eventually the patient had to be admitted to another hospital. Following the incident, the family has demanded an impartial probe by the AIIMS hospital administration and the state government and disciplinary action against the erring doctors and staff. They said that the aim of a government institution like AIIMS is to provide free and quality treatment to the patients, but the humiliation and neglect meted out to them is intolerable. The family also alleged that the hospital staff repeatedly said that beds and resources were not available, whereas the facility being a government hospital should have been available for patients. As per doctor advise Surgery may be necessary if the wound infection is severe, and it can be risky for the patient’s health. The family says that due to not getting proper treatment on time, the patient showed symptoms of high fever and infection, which increased the anxiety. No official spokesperson of AIIMS Guwahati has commented on the matter so far. The conscious circle has called upon the hospital administration to issue a public report to investigate the matter and clarify the behaviour of the staff concerned and the availability of beds and treatment as required. The victim’s family has also sought the intervention of the Assam government to prevent recurrence of such cases and ensure respectful treatment to the patients. The family has also spread widespread awareness by sharing the details of the incident through social media and appealed to the state government to take action. The case raises questions about the rights of patients in hospitals and the provision of accessible, dignified treatment. Now what action does the administration and the government take on this, people are focused on it.
