By Pankaj Nath, Assam: People from the Nalbari assembly constituency, along with various organizations, have swiftly raised demands to grant influential leader and former powerful minister in Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s previous cabinet, Jayanta Malla Barua from Nalbari, Assam, a special ministerial position with important departments in Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s new BJP government cabinet. Jayanta Malla Barua, who reached the assembly by defeating Congress candidate Ashok Kumar Sharma by a massive margin of 60,101 votes in the 2026 assembly elections, is highly likely to secure a place in the cabinet this time as well. Residents of the Nalbari assembly constituency and local organizations have united in appealing to the BJP leadership to assign him key departments, considering his long political experience and regional contributions.

In the 2026 assembly elections, Jayanta Malla Barua defeated Congress candidate Ashok Sharma by a huge margin on the Nalbari seat, strengthening the BJP alliance’s victory. He had also played an active role in the previous Himanta Biswa Sarma government, which is why locals want to see him in an important ministerial position again.Local organizations say that Jayanta Malla Barua, representing a crucial area like Nalbari, should be given the PWD, Industries, or other major departments along with a special ministerial role. People there say, “Jayanta Malla Barua has always protected Nalbari’s interests. He should be given important responsibilities this time too.”Speculations are rife about the expansion of the BJP alliance government’s cabinet following Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s oath-taking today. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma recently stated that the cabinet would ensure proper representation from all regions. BJP workers in the Nalbari assembly constituency hope their demand will be considered soon.Jayanta Malla Barua has made no comment on this matter, but his supporters are actively lobbying. This demand has become a key issue for Nalbari, as the region needs strong leadership for development.
