New Delhi: The Delhi government has unveiled plans to set up two Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence (AI-CoEs) under the IndiaAI Mission, aiming to accelerate innovation, strengthen the start-up ecosystem and drive job creation in the national capital.
Backed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in partnership with leading academic institutions including Netaji Subhas University of Technology and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, the initiative is positioned as a major push towards AI-led economic growth and digital governance.
Each centre will be developed with an outlay of ₹20 crore under a 40:40:20 funding model involving MeitY, the Delhi government and industry or academic partners. Over a four-year period, the AI-CoEs are expected to support around 100 start-ups, train more than 7,000 individuals and generate over 1,000 jobs.
Delhi IT Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the move marks a “decisive leap into the future”, adding that the centres will nurture cutting-edge research while ensuring technology delivers tangible benefits for citizens.
The AI-CoEs will function as integrated platforms bringing together government, academia and industry to develop scalable, real-world solutions. A key focus will be on deploying AI-driven tools in governance to improve efficiency, transparency and public service delivery.
The initiative also aims to build a future-ready workforce through structured training programmes, certifications and capacity-building in AI and emerging technologies, addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals.
Officials said the centres are expected to attract fresh investments into the AI and IT sectors, reinforcing Delhi’s ambition to emerge as a leading hub for next-generation technologies.
