One operative arrested; investigators probe foreign-linked smuggling network after major narcotics haul.
CHANDIGARH/AMRITSAR: Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence (CI) unit in Amritsar has dismantled an alleged cross-border narcotics smuggling and organised criminal network, arresting one operative and seizing 20 kg of heroin in a major anti-drug operation.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav identified the accused as Om Sharma, a resident of Jhabal in Tarn Taran district. Police also impounded a Honda City car allegedly used to transport narcotics during the operation.
According to the DGP, preliminary investigations indicate that the accused was acting under the directions of a foreign-based handler allegedly linked to cross-border smugglers. He is suspected of receiving heroin consignments in the border belt and distributing them to other contacts across Punjab.
Acting on specific intelligence, the CI Amritsar team intercepted the suspect near Dana Mandi, Sohian Kalan, on Fatehgarh Churian Road in Amritsar while he was allegedly transporting a fresh heroin consignment. The police recovered 20 kg of heroin from his possession during the raid.
Investigators believe the narcotics were smuggled into India through the Ajnala border sector using drones before being routed through local operatives for distribution within the state.
Police said further investigations are underway to identify the network’s forward and backward linkages, trace other associates, and examine possible connections with previously uncovered narcotics smuggling modules.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the State Special Operation Cell Police Station in Amritsar.
