Major political, diplomatic and security developments unfolded across Asia and West Asia. The events highlighted leadership tests, regional tensions and growing environmental concerns.

Several major political, diplomatic and security developments unfolded across Asia and West Asia on Monday, including China’s remarks on its border agreements with India, a key Communist Party meeting in Beijing and talks between senior defence officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Pakistan and Iran, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

Other developments included preparations for Israel’s parliamentary elections, warnings over flood risks linked to the Brahmaputra in Tibet, the extended detention of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s sisters, and diplomatic engagements involving Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

China said it was strictly abiding by relevant agreements with India and conducting normal border patrols to safeguard its sovereignty, PTI reported.

The Chinese Communist Party also began a four-day plenary session on Monday. The meeting is being described as a key conclave that could pave the way for President Xi Jinping’s fourth five-year term and select the party’s new leadership ahead of its once-in-five-year Congress next year.

In Tehran, senior defence officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan jointly met Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei on Monday. They discussed the regional situation amid escalating tensions, according to PTI.

A US congressional delegation met Nepal’s House of Representatives Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal on Monday. The two sides discussed bilateral relations, economic cooperation, climate-related disasters and parliamentary ties, the Speaker’s secretariat said.

Israel will hold parliamentary elections on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeking to retain power amid debate over his government’s handling of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, the wars that followed, and its domestic and foreign policies.

The election, Israel’s first since the events of October 7, 2023, is also being viewed as a referendum on Netanyahu’s leadership. The campaign has been shaped by war, military conscription and ethnic tensions, PTI reported.

Chinese researchers have warned that the Brahmaputra River in Tibet could see increased runoff and a higher risk of flooding during this century. China is building what is described as the world’s largest dam on the river at an estimated cost of USD 168 billion.

Pakistan’s Punjab government has extended the detention of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s three sisters for another 30 days under a public safety law, an official told PTI on Monday.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to visit Russia in the coming weeks for talks with President Vladimir Putin, according to a media report cited by PTI.

Sri Lanka has repatriated 40 Iranian sailors after rescuing them from a vessel in distress off its southern coast and providing them with medical care.
