Pankaj Nath, Assam, August 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has again been targeted with a death threat circulated on social media, marking the second such incident in three days. According to police, a Facebook post allegedly made by a man identifying himself as Mubarak Ali of Garaimari in Juria, Nagaon district, demanded Rs 2 crore in exchange for killing the chief minister and included objectionable slogans. Juria police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Officers conducted a search at Ali’s home in Garaimari, Nagaon, but investigators have not yet confirmed whether the social-media account that posted the threat actually belongs to him. Police said they are probing the exact nature of the threat and working to identify the individuals responsible. Local residents told police that Ali has been living in Kerala for roughly two years and shared certain allegations about his personal life and identity. Those claims have not been independently verified by authorities. The latest incident follows the arrest three days earlier of Abdul Mutalib from Morigaon district, who is accused of issuing a death threat against Chief Minister Sarma during live comments on the Chief Minister’s Independence Day speech. Mutalib allegedly demanded Rs 1 crore in return for killing the chief minister. In connection with that case, Bhuragaon police also detained Mutalib’s father, brother and another person on suspicion of involvement. Police said inquiries are ongoing in both cases and indicated that further legal action is likely once investigations are complete. Authorities emphasized vigilance regarding threats made on social media and pledged to carry out detailed probes and take strict action against those found guilty. The Chief Minister’s office confirmed it is cooperating with security and legal procedures. No official comment has been made about any change to the chief minister’s security detail. As investigations proceed, police have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified material and to report threatening posts or suspicious activity to the nearest station or through official online complaint channels.
