Amritsar: Punjab Police have foiled a suspected terror plot targeting a police establishment with the recovery of a 690-gram Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Amritsar Rural, officials said on Sunday.
The IED was recovered along with an electronic detonator, battery, timer and an iron box from a wax-wrapped packet during night patrolling in the jurisdiction of Police Post Gaggomahal on the intervening night of August 15 and 16.
Punjab Police Director General Gaurav Yadav said the explosive material was handled in accordance with established security protocols and safely defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad.
“The Amritsar Rural Police has foiled a design of anti-national elements and averted a potential threat to public safety,” Yadav said.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar Rural, Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said security checkpoints had been intensified and government establishments were being closely monitored ahead of Independence Day.
According to Chahal, ASI Kulbir Singh spotted the suspicious black-coloured, wax-wrapped packet while conducting night patrols. Examination of the packet revealed the suspected IED and other components.
The Bomb Disposal Squad was immediately called to the spot and the explosive material was destroyed safely, while the other recovered items were taken into police custody.
The police have registered FIR No. 162 dated August 16, 2026, under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act at Ramdas Police Station in Amritsar Rural.
Further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those behind the alleged attack conspiracy.
