Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough in the Batala double murder case, Punjab Police, in coordination with Central agencies, arrested three alleged operatives linked to foreign-based fugitive gangster Happy Jatt from the Indo-Bhutan border in West Bengal while they were allegedly attempting to flee to Bhutan.
According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, the arrests were made under a coordinated crackdown codenamed “Operation Nest Wrecker”, jointly conducted by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), and Batala Police.
The arrested accused were identified as Jatin Singh of Kathunangal in Amritsar, Sajandeep Singh of Sangar Kot village in Tarn Taran, and Mehakdeep Singh of Balia Manjpur in Amritsar. Police said Jatin Singh has a criminal background with multiple cases registered under the Arms Act and NDPS Act.
The case pertains to a firing incident on April 27, 2026, in Bhoma village in Batala, where four unidentified assailants on two motorcycles allegedly opened fire on three individuals around 9 pm. Two persons died in the attack, while another sustained injuries.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused had allegedly carried out the planned killings on the directions of their foreign-based handler Happy Jatt. He added that the accused frequently changed locations to evade arrest.
Additional Director General of Police Promod Ban said police teams from AGTF, Batala Police, intelligence and technical units analysed CCTV footage and tracked the movement of the accused towards the international border region through technical surveillance and intelligence inputs.
A joint team was subsequently dispatched to West Bengal to apprehend the accused and bring them back to Punjab for further investigation.
Police said investigations are continuing to uncover the larger conspiracy, including financial links, logistical support, weapon procurement networks and the involvement of other associates.
An FIR has already been registered at Ghuman Police Station in Batala under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
