International Desk: Pakistan has intensified its crackdown on voices of dissent in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), announcing a reward of Rs 10 million for information leading to the arrest of four prominent leaders of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a group spearheading protests over rising inflation, unemployment and chronic power shortages.

The move is being viewed by activists as another attempt by Islamabad to silence growing public anger in the region rather than address the hardships faced by ordinary residents.

Deadly Crackdown Leaves Over 100 Protesters Dead

According to reports, more than 100 protesters have been killed and over 400 injured in recent operations carried out by Pakistani security forces. The demonstrations were organised to demand basic civic rights, affordable electricity and economic relief.

Instead of engaging with the protesters, Pakistan declared JAAC a “terrorist” organisation and imposed a ban on its activities. Critics have described the decision as a politically motivated effort to criminalise peaceful dissent and suppress demands for accountability.

Human rights observers have raised alarm over allegations of excessive force, mass detentions and restrictions on freedom of expression across PoK.

India Condemns Pakistan’s Actions

India has strongly denounced Pakistan’s treatment of protesters in PoK, accusing Islamabad of serious human rights violations. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the international community must hold Pakistan accountable for its actions and ensure that the rights of the people of PoK are protected.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has also expressed concern over the use of force against demonstrators and the imposition of internet blackouts, warning that such measures further erode civil liberties.

The latest developments have once again drawn attention to Pakistan’s governance record in PoK, where residents have long complained of political repression, economic neglect and restrictions on fundamental freedoms.
