New Delhi: Senior officials from Punjab, including the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) and the Director General of Police, appeared before the Committee on Privileges of the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Thursday, marking a significant development in the ongoing proceedings linked to an alleged incident on the House floor earlier this year.
During the meeting held at the Assembly premises, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Shri Alok Shekhar, DGP Punjab Shri Gaurav Yadav, and Police Commissioner Jalandhar Ms. Dhanpreet Kaur presented their submissions before the panel.
The Privileges Committee, chaired by Shri Pradyumn Singh Rajput, comprises members Abhay Kumar Verma, Ajay Kumar Mahawar, Shri Neeraj Basoya, Shri Ram Singh Netaji, Shri Ravi Kant, Shri Satish Upadhyay, Shri Surender Kumar, and Shri Surya Prakash Khatri.
Report Awaited, House to Decide After Deliberations
Addressing the media, Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Shri Vijender Gupta, said the Committee is currently examining the matter and its report is awaited. He stated that it is premature to specify a timeline for completion of the process.
“Once the Committee finalizes its report, it will be tabled before the House. The House will deliberate on the recommendations, and the final decision will thereafter be taken by the Chair,” the Speaker said.
Zero Tolerance on Breach of Privileges
Referring to the issue of alleged sacrilege raised during the proceedings, the Speaker noted that the incident concerning the alleged desecration of the Gurus took place on the floor of the House on January 6, 2026. The process to address the matter is currently underway.
Emphasizing the sanctity of legislative functioning, Shri Gupta asserted that there can be no compromise on the privileges of the House, its officials, and its members. “The dignity of the Assembly reflects the essence of India’s democratic system and constitutional framework,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of legislative privilege, the Speaker stated that such privilege ensures members can participate in discussions freely and without external pressure. Any interference, tampering, or violation of these privileges, he warned, will face zero tolerance.
He further assured that all proceedings will be conducted strictly in accordance with established rules and procedures, in a time-bound, orderly, and transparent manner.
Stressing impartiality, Shri Gupta said any action taken by the Assembly would be guided solely by principles of justice and fairness. “The objective is to ensure that the outcome commands respect for its integrity and impartiality,” he added.
