A shocking incident has emerged from China’s Shaanxi province, forcing people around the world to rethink technology and safety.

Beijing: A startling episode at a cultural event in Shaanxi University has raised fresh concerns about the reliability of advanced machines. A humanoid robot, originally programmed for a simple dance performance, suddenly went off-script—leaving the audience stunned.

Forgets dance routine, hugs student instead
According to the viral clip, the robot was meant to perform choreographed moves. Midway through the act, however, it unexpectedly approached a female student and tightly embraced her. The gesture appeared uncannily human, catching both the student and onlookers off guard. A staff member quickly stepped in to pull the robot away and restore order.

Glitch—or AI thinking for itself?
The incident has ignited a fierce debate online. Some believe it signals a worrying future where AI systems might act independently, while experts argue it’s far more likely a technical malfunction—such as a software glitch or sensor error—rather than any form of autonomous intent. Despite this, the university administration has downplayed the situation, describing it as part of a “joint cultural activity”, even as safety concerns persist.

Not an isolated case
This isn’t the first time humanoid robots have behaved unpredictably:

  • In March, a robot in Macau reportedly chased a 70-year-old woman, leaving her shaken.
  • In another recent Shaanxi incident, a dancing robot struck a nearby child.

With such events becoming more frequent, a pressing question remains: are these machines truly safe, or could they become a risk to humans in the years ahead?
