Proxy worker’s cash-for-favours racket inside Cachar District Election Department sparks outrage; sting operation video captures transaction,
Sarimul haque laskar:-silchar:- Amid the intense heat of elections, a massive corruption scandal has rocked Silchar, throwing the transparency and impartiality of the district election system into serious doubt.
Serious allegations of bribery involving a proxy worker have created a huge stir in administrative and political circles across Cachar district.
The complaint was filed by an Independent candidate from the 118 Silchar Assembly constituency. In a written complaint submitted to the General Observer, he has alleged that a so-called “proxy worker” named Anamul Haque Barbhuiya has been illegally operating inside the District Election Office for a long time without any official appointment or permission.
He is accused of handling sensitive government and confidential work and offering favours in exchange for cash to influence the electoral process.
The gravity of the allegation has increased dramatically after a sensational video from a news media sting operation. The hidden camera reportedly captured the moment money was being handed over, clearly showing the accused accepting cash. As soon as the video surfaced, intense discussions broke out in the office area, and anger and concern have spread among the general public.
The most alarming part is that two senior government officials have also been named in the complaint. Although the administration has not yet issued any official reaction, sources say the matter has already reached higher authorities and an investigation is likely.
At such a sensitive time during elections, this kind of allegation can severely damage public faith in the democratic process. Especially when the Election Commission has issued strict guidelines to ensure transparent and impartial voting, such incidents raise major questions about the credibility of the entire administrative system.
The Independent candidate has claimed that this proxy worker has been exerting influence inside the District Election Office for years. Earlier verbal complaints against him were reportedly ignored, allowing the corruption network to grow even deeper. In the wake of the incident, demands for an impartial and transparent investigation have grown louder from various quarters, along with calls for strict administrative action against all those named.
According to the complaint, Anamul Haque Barbhuiya has been regularly performing important duties inside the election office without any valid government appointment. He is alleged to have sat at official desks and handled key tasks such as issuing digitally certified copies of voter lists, processing PRC applications, official approvals, and even other sensitive and confidential administrative work.
He is also accused of taking cash from ordinary citizens in exchange for getting their work done.
The complaint further states that two government officers enabled this illegal activity. They are:
Juned Ahmed Mazumdar (District Manager, DIETC)
Probir Kurmi (Nazir, Deputy Commissioner’s Office and Upper Division Assistant, Election Department)
The complainant alleges that these two officials allowed the proxy worker free access to the office and helped him interfere in administrative work. This has turned the matter from a simple departmental irregularity into a serious issue involving abuse of power, corruption, and a complete lack of administrative transparency.
The scandal has become even more significant because the Model Code of Conduct is currently in force. Allowing an unauthorised person to handle secret documents, voter data, official files, or digital approvals inside the Election Department during this sensitive period is extremely concerning. Such incidents not only point to administrative failure but also directly question the fairness and integrity of the entire electoral process.
