Chandigarh/Amritsar: In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling networks, Punjab’s Counter Intelligence unit in Amritsar arrested two brothers linked to a drug and illegal arms smuggling module, recovering 5.5 kg heroin, four pistols and 10 live cartridges from their possession.
The accused, identified as Bobby Singh and Harjit Singh of Rokhe village in Ajnala, Amritsar, were allegedly working in coordination with a cross-border smuggler and were receiving consignments for further distribution in Punjab, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday.
Police also impounded a black Hero Splendor motorcycle allegedly used for transporting the contraband.
According to the DGP, Counter Intelligence Amritsar received a tip-off that the duo was heading to deliver a consignment of arms and ammunition near Kale Ghanupur village on the Amritsar bypass highway. Acting swiftly, police teams laid a trap and intercepted the suspects.
During the search, four pistols and 10 live cartridges were recovered from the duo. Subsequent questioning led to the recovery of 5.5 kg heroin from Bhaka Tara Singh village.
Police said further investigations are underway to trace backward and forward linkages of the network and identify other associates connected to the module.
An FIR has been registered at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar under relevant sections of the Arms Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the NDPS Act.
