Chandigarh/Gurdaspur: Punjab Police on Thursday said it had busted an ISI-backed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror module with the arrest of two operatives in Gurdaspur district, recovering five hand grenades and improvised explosive device (IED) material, indicating preparations for “high-impact” attacks.

The accused, identified as Akash Masih and Jablaun, both residents of Dulla Nangal under Ghuman Kalan police station in Gurdaspur, have a criminal background, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said.

According to the police, the arrests were made during a joint operation by Amritsar Rural Police, Gurdaspur Police and the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), Amritsar, of the Counter Intelligence wing, in coordination with central agencies.

Yadav said the recoveries included five hand grenades, two special detonators, a push-to-talk (PTT) timer with coder and decoder, a 9V battery, around 1 kg of high explosive packed with nails, and a Baofeng walkie-talkie with cable and trigger mechanism. “The recovery indicates that the module was preparing to carry out high-impact terror attacks aimed at disturbing public peace,” he said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Sandeep Goel said preliminary investigations suggest the module was being operated by foreign-based handlers linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Efforts are underway to establish forward and backward linkages and to identify local support networks, he added.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurdaspur Aditya said the arrests followed a special checking operation at T-point Jogowal Bedia. Two suspects on a motorcycle attempted to flee after spotting the police but were intercepted.

“The pillion rider was carrying two bags covered with cloth. On search, explosive material and devices were recovered,” the SSP said, adding that forensic and bomb disposal teams were immediately called to the spot and the explosives were safely defused.

An FIR (No. 45 dated April 8, 2026) has been registered under Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act at Kalanaur police station in Gurdaspur. Further investigation is in progress.
