SARIMUL LASKAR, SILCHAR: In a major breakthrough against illegal liquor smuggling, Hailakandi Police have seized approximately Rs 50 lakh worth of smuggled liquor in a special operation at the Laxmirbond Bypass area of the district. One truck driver has been arrested in connection with the case.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Hailakandi Police intercepted a suspicious truck bearing registration number AS01-NC-6426 at Laxmirbond Bypass. During thorough checking, officers discovered a large quantity of illicit liquor cleverly concealed inside specially fabricated secret chambers inside the truck.
The driver, identified as Zakir Hussain Choudhury, was immediately detained and is being interrogated. Preliminary investigation suggests that the consignment was being smuggled from Meghalaya to Mizoram.
Police believe this was part of an organised smuggling racket operating across the inter-state border.
The market value of the seized liquor has been estimated at around Rs 50 lakh. Senior police officials have stated that efforts are underway to identify other members of the smuggling network. Further investigation is in progress to uncover the full chain, including financiers and receivers.
Local residents have welcomed the police action and urged authorities to continue such drives to curb the flow of illegal liquor in the region.
The Hailakandi Police are now examining call records, financial transactions, and other leads from the arrested driver to trace the broader syndicate.
