International Desk: A 50-year-old Hindu jewellery shop owner, Niranjan Chandra Sutradha, has been found dead inside a drum floating in water near a sluice gate in the Begunbari area of Mymensingh, Bangladesh.
The discovery has raised concerns after police found apparent sharp-weapon injury marks on the victim’s head and chest. Police suspect that he was killed before his body was placed inside the drum and dumped in the water.
Credit Union Token Leads Police to Identity
The case came to light on Wednesday when local residents spotted a drum floating in the water. Police recovered the body of an unidentified man wrapped in cloth from inside.
During a search, investigators found a token bearing the name Mymensingh Hindu Cooperative Credit Union Limited in the pocket of the deceased’s trousers. Police contacted the organisation using the information on the token, eventually establishing the victim’s identity as Niranjan Chandra Sutradha.
Wife and Son Confirm Identity
Niranjan jointly ran a jewellery shop in the Atharbari Building area of Mymensingh city. He lived in a rented house in the Stadium area with his wife, Sumita Rani Sutradha, and their son, Joy Sutradha.
His wife and son identified the body on Thursday evening. Ruhul Amin, a Sub-Inspector at Kotwali Model Police Station, said the family was traced through the credit union token, which helped confirm the victim’s identity.
Missing Since 20 September
Niranjan had been missing since 20 September. His family did not initially report him missing because he had previously stayed away from home for three to four days at a time.
A preliminary examination of the body revealed serious injuries to the head and chest, apparently inflicted with a sharp weapon. Mohammad Shibirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said the initial investigation suggested that Niranjan had been killed and his body subsequently placed inside the drum and thrown into the water.
Police are continuing their investigation, while the victim’s family is in the process of filing a formal complaint.
