Amritsar: Punjab Police has arrested three suspects, including a juvenile, after busting an alleged cross-border arms and explosives smuggling module in Amritsar and seizing a hand grenade and three sophisticated firearms, officials said on Tuesday.
According to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the recovered cache includes an AK-47 rifle, a modified M4-type .30-bore automatic weapon, a specially modified .30-bore semi-automatic weapon and five magazines. The accused have been identified as Aakashbir Singh alias Kaashi, Joban Singh, both residents of Amritsar district, and a juvenile.
Police said preliminary investigation indicates the suspects were allegedly procuring advanced weapons, ammunition and explosives through drone drops from across the international border. Acting on specific intelligence, Amritsar Rural Police carried out a targeted operation near the Attari area and apprehended the trio while recovering the arms and grenade.
DGP Yadav said investigators are working to trace the source of the weapons, identify those linked to the network and determine their intended use.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural) Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said further investigation is underway and that additional arrests and recoveries are expected in the coming days.
A case has been registered at Gharinda Police Station under relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the Explosive Substances Act.
