Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai Zonal Unit, has busted an international hashish smuggling operation with the seizure of 7.85 kg of the narcotic substance concealed inside an international courier consignment originating from New York, United States. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers uncovered a novel modus operandi in which hashish was allegedly smuggled into Mumbai by concealing it inside a parcel declared as a framed bathroom wall mirror.
Following the intelligence input, officers intercepted and examined the suspicious consignment at the International Courier Terminal in Mumbai. During inspection, they dismantled the wooden cuboidal frame of the mirror and discovered eight concealed packets containing 169 smaller packets of a blackish resinous substance of varying weights.
Preliminary testing using an NDPS field testing kit confirmed the substance as hashish. The total gross weight of the seized contraband was 7,850 grams (7.85 kg).
The narcotic substance was seized under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Following sustained investigations, DRI officers traced the consignee of the courier parcel and arrested the individual on 2 November 2026 under the provisions of the Act.
Further investigation is underway to uncover the wider smuggling network, identify other individuals involved and establish possible domestic and international links.
The DRI reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and dismantling illicit narcotics networks, contributing to the Government of India’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and its vision of a drug-free India.
