400–500 police booths to come up beneath flyovers across the capital; Indian Oil adopts five flyovers and Aurobindo Marg stretch under CSR initiative

NEW DELHI: Delhi’s neglected spaces beneath flyovers are set for a major transformation, with wildlife-themed installations, classical dance-inspired artwork, science displays and dedicated yoga spaces planned across the capital under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative led by the Public Works Department (PWD), Government of NCT of Delhi.

Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh on Thursday visited the Chirag Delhi and IIT Delhi flyovers to review the ongoing beautification work and assess its progress.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd has adopted five flyovers and the Aurobindo Marg road stretch. The company will develop and maintain these locations for three years, with individual themes designed to reflect the character and surroundings of each area.

The selected locations and their themes include Chirag Delhi Flyover, which will showcase nature and wildlife; Panchsheel Flyover, featuring Indian classical dance in modern art; IIT Delhi Flyover, dedicated to science and technology; Punjabi Bagh Flyover, which will house a Yogshala; and Mukarba Chowk Flyover, designed as an inter-transit hub. The Aurobindo Marg stretch will feature a lively, multi-coloured expression of public space.

Chirag Delhi to Become a Green Urban Pocket

At the busy Chirag Delhi junction in South Delhi, the area beneath the flyover is being developed as a green public space under the Nature and Wildlife theme. Wall art and installations depicting birds, animals and plant life, complemented by landscaped greenery, will highlight India’s natural heritage.

The initiative aims to turn an otherwise neglected urban space into a visually engaging environment for thousands of commuters passing through the junction every day.

Speaking about the project, Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the government was partnering with major corporations to utilise CSR funds for the adoption, beautification and long-term maintenance of spaces beneath flyovers.

He said every MoU involved a maintenance commitment of two to three years, adding that Indian Oil had undertaken the development of five flyovers and the Aurobindo Marg stretch. The department was working to improve Delhi’s roads and enhance the appearance of the national capital.

400–500 Police Booths Planned Across Delhi

In a parallel public-safety initiative, the PWD is constructing 400–500 police booths beneath flyovers across Delhi in coordination with Delhi Police.

The booths are being developed using the department’s own funds and will subsequently be handed over to Delhi Police. The initiative seeks to make productive use of underutilised spaces while strengthening police presence at busy junctions and major traffic corridors.

The minister said the spaces beneath flyovers should serve the people of Delhi, adding that strategically located police booths would help improve public safety and enable quicker police response.

The construction work will progress flyover by flyover across the city in coordination with Delhi Police.

With themed public spaces and police infrastructure being developed beneath flyovers, the PWD initiative seeks to give a new civic purpose to areas that have traditionally remained neglected in the capital’s urban landscape.
