New Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has allegedly been fined ₹50,000 under the Customs Act, 1962, following a customs inspection after his return from a foreign trip, Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra claimed on Friday.
According to Malhotra, Mann allegedly attempted to pass through the green channel at customs despite carrying luxury goods liable to taxation. Alert customs officials reportedly stopped him, inspected his baggage and imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on several items.
Malhotra described the reported penalty as unprecedented, claiming that Mann had become the first Chief Minister in the country to be fined under the Customs Act, 1962.
Taking aim at Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi BJP chief sought an explanation over the alleged customs violation and questioned what taxable goods Mann was reportedly carrying.
Malhotra also questioned the message the alleged incident would send to ordinary citizens, arguing that public representatives should be accountable for compliance with customs regulations.
He urged Kejriwal to clarify why the Punjab Chief Minister had allegedly attempted to use the green channel despite carrying taxable goods and what items were involved.
