New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday called upon students to treat education not merely as a personal milestone but as a commitment towards society and nation-building while addressing the 14th annual convocation ceremony of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi.
Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said a degree represents the beginning of greater responsibilities and praised the university for emerging as a strong centre for social sciences, humanities and public engagement over the past 17 years. He highlighted the institution’s role in implementing the National Education Policy, promoting research, preserving Indian knowledge traditions and supporting student welfare initiatives.
Referring to rapid global technological changes and the rise of artificial intelligence, Sandhu said India’s greatest strength lies in its youth population and stressed the need for multidisciplinary learning, innovation, entrepreneurship and stronger industry collaboration. He also urged students to cultivate integrity, empathy and leadership in public life.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta congratulated the graduating students and said the convocation marked not just academic success but the acceptance of new social responsibilities. She noted that the university, which began with only 19 students, has now expanded to over 6,000 students and continues to uphold Babasaheb Ambedkar’s ideals of equality, social awareness and nation-building.
Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047, the Chief Minister said small nation-first efforts by citizens, including resource conservation and self-reliance, would strengthen the country’s economy and accelerate growth.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said education remains the most powerful force for transforming individuals and nations. He urged students to embrace lifelong learning, innovation, responsible citizenship and ethical values in an era shaped by technology and global challenges.
The ceremony began with an NCC guard of honour and was attended by faculty members, researchers, students and distinguished guests. Degrees were conferred on undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students across disciplines, while research work in Development Studies, Human Ecology, Social Design, Archaeology and Urban Studies received special recognition. The university also released its newsletter and research compendium and completed the uploading of degree scrolls to DigiLocker as part of its digital governance initiatives.
