‘Government on Wheels’ inspection covers six departments across Central and West Delhi; officials given deadlines for civic fixes

New Delhi: Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh has ordered the re-carpeting of Rohtak Road, installation of new lights beneath the Rani Jhansi Flyover and drain desilting at Zakhira during a ‘Government on Wheels’ inspection across Central and West Delhi.

Officials from six departments, including PWD, Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Irrigation and Flood Control, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), district administrations and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), accompanied the minister on a single bus to inspect civic problems and assign responsibility for their resolution on the spot.

The inspection began at Panchkuiyan Road and covered Rani Jhansi Road, Idgah Road, the Rani Jhansi Flyover, Rohtak Road, New Rohtak Road, Zakhira, Karampura Flyover, Patel Road and Shadipur before concluding at Shankar Road. Shopkeepers, commuters and residents also raised their concerns directly with the minister.

Rohtak Road, which has deteriorated due to utility work undertaken by DTL and BSES, will be fully re-carpeted after the pending work by DJB, BSES and DTL is completed. The minister directed the agencies to coordinate their activities to prevent repeated digging of roads.

On Rani Jhansi Road and Idgah Road, the PWD has been directed to repair damaged road patches and broken footpaths within 15 days.

The PWD and MCD have been instructed to install new lights beneath the Rani Jhansi Flyover, undertake a cleanliness drive and remove encroachments within a week. At New Rohtak Road and Zakhira, the PWD will desilt drains and clear blocked outlets to address waterlogging.

Directions were also issued to the PWD and DMRC to repair potholes, restore road markings and signage, and remove construction debris near metro structures at Karampura Flyover, Patel Road and Shadipur. At Shankar Road, the MCD has been asked to clear roadside debris and improve sanitation.

Emphasising accountability and time-bound action, Parvesh Sahib Singh said residents expected tangible improvements rather than promises of development.

“Delhi’s people don’t need speeches about development. They need a road without potholes, a drain that doesn’t overflow and a footpath they can walk on safely,” the minister said.

He added that bringing officials from multiple departments together enabled problems to be assessed and solutions decided immediately. He also directed officials to revisit the locations and demonstrate the work completed, stressing that accountability must be backed by deadlines.

Launched last year, the ‘Government on Wheels’ initiative brings officials from multiple departments together for joint inspections and on-the-spot decisions. Earlier phases covered East Delhi, Outer and Rural Delhi, and South Delhi.

A follow-up review of the directions issued during Saturday’s inspection will be held within a month, with similar tours scheduled to continue across the city.
