The forest was my fortress, freedom my creed — the story of the struggle against British rule, in the words of the revolutionaries – Colonel Jeevan Singh

SUNDERBANI, An MRMA 2.0 Awareness Programme on Sericulture was successfully organised at Sira Village, District Reasi, Jammu & Kashmir, on 14 August 2026, with the active participation of 33 farmers. The programme was organised with the objective of creating greater awareness among farmers regarding the adoption of scientific sericulture practices, improved silkworm rearing techniques and effective crop management measures for enhancing cocoon productivity and quality.
The programme was organised by Dr. Sheetal Rani, Scientist-B, P-4, Basic Seed Farm, Manasbal, in coordination with Shri Parshotam Lal, Senior Technical Assistant (STA), CSB-REC, Lambari, and the State Sericulture Department, In-charge, Sira.
During the awareness programme, farmers were provided with detailed information on the different aspects of scientific silkworm rearing, beginning with proper preparation of the rearing house and continuing through the various stages of silkworm development.
The importance of maintaining a clean and hygienic rearing environment was explained, with emphasis on regular cleaning, sanitation and disinfection of the rearing house, appliances, trays and other equipment before and during the rearing period.
Farmers were sensitised about the importance of maintaining optimum temperature and relative humidity according to the age of the silkworms. The need for proper ventilation, adequate spacing and suitable environmental conditions was also discussed to reduce stress on silkworms and support healthy growth.
Special emphasis was placed on silkworm disease management. Farmers were made aware of the major diseases affecting silkworms, particularly grasserie, including its common symptoms, early identification and preventive measures. They were advised to maintain strict hygiene, avoid overcrowding, remove unhealthy larvae promptly and follow recommended preventive practices to minimise the spread of diseases during rearing.
