Pankaj Nath , Assam: The 80th Independence Day was celebrated in Kamrup district, Assam on Saturday at the North Guwahati College Playground, North Guwahati, Kamrup with a series of patriotic, cultural and ceremonial programmes. The district-level celebration was graced by Kamrup District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra, as the Chief Guest. He hoisted the National Flag in the presence of MLA, Hajo-Sualkuchi, Prakash Das. Prior to the flag hoisting, the District Commissioner paid floral tribute to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. Following the flag hoisting, he received the salute of an impressive parade presented by contingents of the police, NCC and other participating groups. In his Independence Day address, the District Commissioner paid homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and remembered with deep respect the brave martyrs who made immense sacrifices during the freedom struggle. He highlighted India’s steady progress in development and advancement and spoke about various initiatives undertaken by the State Government for the rapid development of Assam. He also underlined the significant contribution of various government schemes being implemented in Kamrup towards the welfare and development of the people. The programme also featured patriotic and cultural performances, including dance and musical presentations by various institutions and cultural groups, adding colour and fervour to the celebrations. Prize distribution ceremonies were held to honour the winners of various competitions, including extempore speech and essay competitions organised among students. Individuals associated with the fisheries and other livelihood sectors were also felicitated for their notable contributions. Debeswar Nath and Amulya Kumar, President and Secretary, respectively, of the Rajapukhuri Fish Farming Community, Rajapukhuri, Bijaynagar, were felicitated for their contribution towards livelihood generation through fish farming. Amal Bharali, Chief Executive Officer, Uttaran Agro Farmers Producer Company, Kaniha, Rangia, was also felicitated for his contribution. Kendriya Vidyalaya, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, was presented with a letter of appreciation for its support in ensuring the smooth, fair and incident-free conduct of the NEET (UG) 2026 examination held on June 21, 2026. An exhibition showcasing the activities, achievements and initiatives of various government departments was also organised as part of the Independence Day celebrations. Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission, Kamrup, secured the first position in the exhibition, followed by the Agriculture Department in second place and the Fisheries Department in third place. Prizes were also presented to the best contingents participating in the Independence Day parade in the professional and non-professional categories. Earlier in the morning, District Development Commissioner, Kamrup, Susanta Kumar Dutta, hoisted the National Flag at the Integrated District Commissioner’s Office, Amingaon, in the presence of officers and employees of the office. The celebrations commenced with a Prabhat Ferry organised jointly by the North Guwahati Municipal Board and the District Information and Public Relations Officer’s Office, Kamrup. The programme was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, Subhasish Baruah; President, Kamrup Zila Parishad, Nipon Bhuyan; former MLA of Palasbbari Hemanga Thakuria; along with other dignitaries, officers and officials, students, cultural groups and members of the public.
