New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday distributed free bicycles to more than 500 meritorious girl students in the R.K. Puram Assembly constituency, calling girls’ education the “foundation of the nation’s bright future.”
Addressing a felicitation and bicycle distribution programme, the Chief Minister said bicycles would not only ease travel for students but also strengthen their confidence, independence and aspirations. The cycles were distributed to girls who had passed Classes 10 and 12 to help them continue their education with greater safety and convenience.
Announcing a major expansion of the initiative, Rekha Gupta said the Delhi Government would provide bicycles to all girls taking admission in Class 9 in government schools. Around 1.30 lakh girls enrol in Class 9 every year, and the scheme aims to support them through school, college and coaching education. The distribution process is expected to begin after the summer vacation.
Calling the initiative a significant step towards women’s empowerment, the Chief Minister said no girl should be forced to compromise on her studies or dreams due to lack of resources. She added that the Delhi Government remains committed to improving educational opportunities, safety and facilities for girls across the capital.
The Chief Minister also praised R.K. Puram MLA Anil Sharma and Rotary Club Delhi Imperial for organising the programme and distributing bicycles even before the government scheme officially begins.
Several dignitaries, including BJP District President Ravindra Chaudhary, were present at the event.
