New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday distributed LPG connections to women beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) at an event held in the Wazirpur area, calling the initiative a major step towards improving women’s health and reducing pollution in the national capital.
Speaking at the programme, the Chief Minister said the scheme represents “a new dawn of dignity and health” for women, adding that providing access to clean cooking fuel is essential for creating smoke-free homes and safer kitchens.
“This is not just a government service, but a decisive step towards protecting women’s dignity, health and future,” she said.
2.5 Lakh Families in Delhi Benefited So Far
The Chief Minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, more than 2.5 lakh families in Delhi have benefitted from the Ujjwala Yojana. She emphasised that the shift from traditional fuels such as wood, coal and dung-based cakes to LPG is a “transformative reform”, significantly reducing health risks for women and helping cut household-level emissions.
Gupta said the Delhi Government is working “swiftly and responsibly” to eliminate pollution caused by outdated cooking methods. “Ensuring LPG availability in every household is not only a health safeguard but a step towards a cleaner, pollution-free future,” she said.
Measures to Curb Winter Pollution
Highlighting measures taken during winter months, the Chief Minister said that the government is providing electric heaters to security guards and night-shift workers to discourage the burning of wood for warmth.
She added that awareness campaigns are being conducted across the city to encourage ironing workers to switch from coal-based irons to gas or electric alternatives, with the goal of eventually phasing out such pollution-intensive practices.
‘Safer Homes, Healthier Families’
Gupta said the new LPG connections distributed under the Ujjwala Yojana will reduce indoor smoke, making kitchens safer for homemakers and helping build a healthier environment for families.
Congratulating all beneficiaries, the Chief Minister said that lists are being prepared to ensure that every eligible household still awaiting an LPG connection under the scheme receives one soon.
“We are committed to ensuring that no family is left behind in benefiting from clean cooking fuel,” she said.
