New Delhi: Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Shri Vijender Gupta called upon the younger generation to actively engage with democratic institutions, ideas and processes, saying an informed and participative youth is vital to the strength of democracy.
Gupta made the remarks while welcoming students from Kirori Mal College and Ramjas College, University of Delhi, during an interactive session organised under the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat’s flagship Youth Outreach Initiative.
The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between young citizens and governance by familiarising Gen Z with legislative procedures and encouraging greater civic responsibility. The programme aims to help young people channel their social awareness and interest in accountability into informed civic participation and public service.
During their visit, the students explored the rich parliamentary heritage of the Assembly building, constructed in 1912. The historic structure earlier housed the Central Legislative Assembly and is associated with prominent figures including Shri Vitthalbhai Patel. The students were also briefed on the Delhi Assembly’s role in democratic governance since its re-establishment in 1993.
The programme included an orientation on legislative procedures, giving students an insight into how laws are drafted, debated and passed. They also watched a short film tracing the evolution of the institution, featuring the voice-over of Padma Bhushan awardee Shri Anupam Kher.
The students were presented with “Ek Shatabdi Yatra”, a commemorative coffee-table publication documenting a century of legislative history, before taking part in a guided tour of the Assembly House chamber.
Emphasising the importance of sustained youth participation, Gupta said the vitality of a democratic society depends on an informed, aware and active younger generation. He stressed that direct exposure to democratic institutions can transform youthful curiosity and energy into meaningful civic engagement, accountability and public service.
