It is common to see people busy with their phones, tablets, and laptops. Whenever they get stuck or need to search for something, they reach out to ChatGPT or Google, as well as other similar search options. You will rarely find someone who tries to refer to books to have knowledge or ask someone around the way to reach a certain place. These digital devices have become friends who are believed to solve nearly all problems. Many feel restless and irritated when their devices are taken away. These are signs of cyber syndrome that arise due to excessive use of the internet and digital devices.

According to a report by the Statista Research Department, the number of internet users in October 2025 was approximately 6.04 billion individuals, which constitutes 73.2 percent of the worldwide population. Out of this 5.66 billion, or 68.7 percent of the global population were social media users. Although there may be gaps in smartphone and internet usagebetween urban and rural areas, the numbers clearly indicate that the internet and smartphones have become indispensable in modern life. These emerging communication technologies have certainly made our lives easier, but have we ever consideredtheir negative effects on physical and mental health?

Digital addiction means becoming dependent on digital devices, while cyber syndrome refers to the overall effects of internet and device use on our physical, mental, and social health. Many people now use the internet and mobile apps to help them with their daily work. Even though they know that spending too much time on screens is harmful to health, they still find it hard to reduce their usage. It is common to hear people say that they have no time to finish their tasks. However, if they check their screen time, they will clearly see where most of their time is going and why they feel short of time.

They are slowly moving away from their family and social life and spend most of their time alone. Some people are busy trying to show that they are beautiful or talented, while others are in a race to prove that they are the best. In this process, they forget that life is about being themselves. There is no need to copy others or compete to be better, because everyone is unique. They often do not realize that too much information, distance from loved ones, stress-based decisions, and negative online experiences can affect their mental clarity.

Limiting screen time is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of cyber syndrome. Follow a digital routine by setting some gadget-free time for yourself. Spend time on your hobbies, meet people, and help others. These simple habits can protect you from the negative effects of cyber syndrome. An important step is to make people aware of cyber syndrome—its causes, effects, and solutions. Many people do not know about cyber syndrome or how it affects health. It is very important to train parents and teachers so they can guide and protect the younger generation. Healthy digital habits are the key to enjoying the benefits of technology without compromising our health.
