Pankaj Nath, Assam: Severe monsoon flooding continues to wreak havoc across Assam, with rivers in several districts surging above danger levels and forcing thousands of residents to flee to relief camps. Authorities say the disaster has so far claimed nearly 50 lives. Sivsagar, Charaideo and Jorhat are among the worst-affected districts, where rapidly rising water levels have inundated villages, damaged homes, and washed away farmland. Road links have been severed in multiple places, disrupting travel between rural and semi-urban areas and hampering relief access.Local officials report extensive damage to agricultural land, private property and public infrastructure.

Access to safe drinking water, food supplies and basic health services is limited in many affected pockets, heightening the urgency of relief efforts. The administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local rescue teams have accelerated operations, using boats to evacuate stranded residents. Relief camps have been bolstered with increased monitoring and provision of essential items. Affected families in shelters are receiving medical check-ups, purified drinking water, dry rations and primary medicines.District authorities have urged residents to stay alert and to evacuate low-lying areas when instructed. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, follow government directives and cooperate with rescue teams. Officials warn that if the situation persists, the crisis could deepen, and they are preparing to scale up response measures as needed.

The meteorological department’s warnings are being closely monitored, and additional resources will be deployed based on evolving weather forecasts. Special district-level monitoring units have been activated to coordinate distribution of relief materials and humanitarian assistance.Local civil society groups and volunteer organizations are actively supplementing official efforts, providing immediate necessities and psychological support to those affected. Authorities have asked the public to rely only on official sources for information to prevent the spread of rumors. State government departments are currently focused on rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations for the displaced. Officials say priorities include ensuring safe shelter, restoring essential services, and initiating damage assessment to plan longer-term recovery.
