Pankaj Nath, Assam, 4 August : Press Information Bureau (PIB), Guwahati, Assam organised a District Media Workshop ‘Varta’ at the Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s Office, Tinsukia, on Tuesday to create awareness about the upcoming Census 2027. Around 35 participants, including media representatives and government officials, attended the workshop.
Addressing the participants at the outset, Sumit Sattavan, IAS, District Commissioner, Tinsukia, outlined the district’s preparedness for the Census. He assured citizens that all information collected during the Census would remain strictly confidential and would not be shared with anyone.
Emphasising the importance of providing accurate information, he said that authentic Census data enables the Government to formulate effective policies and implement welfare schemes for the benefit of citizens. He appreciated the Press Information Bureau for organising the workshop, noting that such interactions strengthen coordination between government agencies and the media. He urged citizens to cooperate wholeheartedly with the Census by providing correct and authentic information, as the data collected serves as the foundation for planning welfare schemes, infrastructure development, and public service delivery. Delivering the keynote presentation on Census 2027, Shri Bikash Nath, Joint Director, Directorate of Census Operations, Assam, explained the two phases of the Census, the use of digital technology, the self-enumeration facility, the confidentiality of personal information, and the roles and responsibilities of Enumerators and Supervisors. He informed that citizens would also have the option of submitting their information through the self-enumeration portal. Dr. Pranjit Saikia, Master Trainer and Associate Professor, Doomdooma College, delivered a comprehensive session highlighting the new features of Census 2027. He noted that, for the first time, the Census would be conducted digitally, leading to better-quality data, faster processing, reduced manual effort, real-time monitoring, and a more environmentally sustainable process. Stressing the importance of public participation, he said the success of the Census depends on the active cooperation of citizens. He also highlighted the crucial role of the media in creating awareness about the Census process and encouraging citizens to provide accurate information.
The workshop was organised as part of PIB’s ongoing media outreach and capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening engagement with journalists at the district level. It provided a platform for interaction and knowledge-sharing between government officials and media professionals, enabling journalists to gain a deeper understanding of key government policies, flagship programmes, and their implementation at the grassroots level.
