Islamabad: Pakistan’s treatment of religious minorities has once again come under scrutiny after a 21-year-old Hindu woman, Rita, was reportedly recovered by Punjab Police following allegations that she was taken from her home and pressured to convert to Islam and marry.

In a significant court ruling, a judicial magistrate allowed Rita to return to her family after she stated under oath that she wanted to go back to her parents of her own free will. The court subsequently handed her into the safe custody of her brother and directed that she be taken safely to the family home in Sanghar, Sindh.

The case originated in Khipro Tehsil of Sanghar district, where Rita, a resident of Rana Rajput Colony, reportedly went missing from her home on 24 August.

Her brother, Ravishankar, lodged a complaint alleging that unidentified individuals took Rita from the house. The family reportedly told authorities that CCTV footage showed her leaving with several people. They further alleged that she was subsequently taken to Gujranwala in Punjab.

According to the complaint, Rita was allegedly subjected to pressure there to convert to Islam and marry Nazir Hussain, a man who was already married.

The allegations have once again raised uncomfortable questions over the security and rights of Pakistan’s Hindu and other religious minority communities, particularly concerning allegations of abduction, coercion, forced conversion and marriage.

After Punjab Police recovered Rita, she was produced before a judicial magistrate on Monday. The investigating officer reportedly argued that Rita did not want to return to her parents and sought her placement in the government women’s shelter, Dar-ul-Aman.

However, her lawyers, Asad Jamal and Kheta Ram, challenged the request, telling the court that Rita wanted to return home with her brother, who was present in court.

The magistrate then directed Rita to record her statement under oath. Her response was unequivocal: she wanted to return to her parents’ home voluntarily.

On the basis of her statement, the court permitted Rita to leave with her brother and placed responsibility for her safe custody and return to the family home in Sanghar with him.

Minority Safety Remains a Major Test for Pakistan

The case adds to persistent concerns about the protection of religious minorities in Pakistan. Rights organisations have repeatedly raised allegations involving the abduction, coercion, conversion and marriage of girls and women from minority communities.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has reported that hundreds of cases involving alleged abductions, forced conversions and forced marriages of minority girls are reported in the country each year.

Rita’s case therefore places Pakistan’s record on minority protection back under the spotlight. The court’s decision to respect her stated wish to return to her family provides a significant legal development, but the allegations surrounding how she was taken away and what allegedly happened afterwards underline the continuing concerns over whether vulnerable minority women can exercise their religious and personal freedoms without coercion.
